Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any prerequisites?

The recommendations are:

  1. A regular personal practice
  2. A consistent attendance at group asana/meditation classes for at least 2 years with a certified yoga teacher(s)
  3. If you are coming from another modality, certification in that area is required

Is full attendance and participation mandatory?

180 hours of contact time is required to graduate. 200+ contact hours are built into the program, leaving some leeway for absence. These hours do not include continued home practice hours, completing readings and assignments, assists, and observations. Please prioritize the training dates making every effort to attend all training sessions.  If you must miss a session, make arrangements with me before hand or if ill please call me and your study partner to collect and review material presented. After 2 excused absences, arrangements between us will need to occur.  Unexcused absences are not permitted.

Is there homework?

Yes, you will receive regular reading assignments from the required textbooks. You will be expected to practice and apply what we are studying in class. You will be expected to develop asana sequences, meditation, pranayama and guided relaxation sequences to present for in session critique on a regular basis. You will be expected to discuss assignments with your study partner and study group on a regular basis. And you will be expected to continue your home practice and attend at least two yoga classes of your choice and location. Sequence preparation is collected.  All other homework is not collected, but it will be beneficial to keeping a log for completion of the final exam.

Is there a final exam?

Yes there is a take home final exam reviewing the entire course of study. It is recommended to complete the exam with your study partner and group.

What is a typical day in training like?

Announcements, Meditation, Asana, Lecture and discussion, practice teaching and critique in small groups and whole group, ending relaxation and or meditation, journaling and reading from the sutras.

What if I take the training but I don’t want to become a teacher?

The program is primarily a self study application of the sutras to deepen one’s personal understanding and practice.  It is from this awareness that teaching evolves for many participants and for others not.  You are not required to teach after completing the program, but you will have the credentials to do so.  All graduates will be recognized as Certified 3rd Street Yoga Teachers in the 200-hour level. Your decision to become a registered Yoga Instructor with the Yoga Alliance is your decision.

Do I have to register with Yoga Alliance?

You are not required to register. However registering with the Alliance for a small fee entitles you to call yourself a 200 hour RYT (registered yoga teacher) recognized by the Alliance nationally/internationally and a public listing on their web site. 3rd Street Yoga is a Yoga Alliance compliant school of training having met nationally accepted standards. The Yoga Alliance certification adds another level of professionalism as it leads the community, sets standards and fosters integrity.  You will be required by the Alliance to maintain your certification with continuing education classes.

Why Register?

What if I don’t choose to register with the Yoga Alliance?

3rd Street Yoga is a recognized and registered Yoga Alliance certified training program. With the 3rd Street Certification, you therefore will be recognized as a Yoga Alliance compliant graduate.  Having the 3rd Street Yoga certification allows you to apply to the Yoga Alliance in the future if you decide to do so as long as you keep up to date on your continuing education classes.

 

After taking the training and becoming a yoga teacher, will I be qualified to purchase Yoga insurance?

Yes. There are many companies that offer insurance for Yoga teachers. We will address this in our business of yoga forum – one of the teacher training sessions.  If you are teaching yoga classes before completing the training, it is suggested to apply for insurance as soon as you begin teaching.

Is overnight lodging available for commuters?

No but there are many nearby accommodations in the Strip District, Downtown Pittsburgh and nearby suburbs .

Where will the training take place?

All Schoolhouse training classes take place at Schoolhouse Yoga, Strip District location. There is parking lot adjacent to the building housing the studio. However, only the half closest to the studio is designated as studio parking. Please only park on the side closest to the building or park in the public lots nearby.

Are there any discounts or scholarships available?

Upon acceptance:  If payment is made in full the cost is $2000 due on or before the first day of class. Payments can be made by personal check, credit card or Pay Pal.

If making payments, the cost is $ 2250 Payment options are available. Payments can be made by personal check or Pay Pal only.  The credit card option is not available for the payment plan.
